Tauri

Build tiny, fast desktop apps with web technologies

Open SourceFree TierAdded Jun 1, 2022

About

Tauri is an open-source framework for building lightweight desktop applications using web technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript/TypeScript) with a Rust backend. Unlike Electron, Tauri apps use the OS native WebView instead of bundling Chromium, resulting in binaries as small as 600KB compared to Electron's 150MB+. It provides native OS APIs for file access, system tray, notifications, and auto-update. Tauri v2 added mobile support for iOS and Android.

Origin Story

By Daniel Thompson-Yvetot

The Problem

Electron apps ship 150MB+ of Chromium for simple desktop tools. Users deserve lightweight, native-feeling applications.

Building It

Started 2019, v1.0 in 2022, v2.0 with mobile support in 2024. 85K+ GitHub stars.

What It Means

Shows that web developers can build desktop apps without the bloat tax of bundling a full browser.

The Dream

Make every desktop application as lightweight and secure as native, while built with web technology.
