Google Analytics was free but came at the cost of giving Google all your website data. Wanted an analytics tool where you own 100% of the data.

Building It

Started as Piwik in 2007. Rebranded to Matomo in 2018. Used on 1M+ websites. One of the longest-running open-source analytics projects.

What It Means

The original open-source Google Analytics alternative. Proving for 18+ years that analytics doesn't require surveillance.
