Fig (Amazon Q for CLI)

AI-powered autocomplete for your terminal

FreeAdded Jan 1, 2021

About

Fig (now part of Amazon Q Developer) adds IDE-style autocomplete to your existing terminal. As you type commands, Fig shows suggestions for subcommands, flags, and file paths in a dropdown — like IntelliSense but for the terminal. Supports 600+ CLI tools including git, docker, npm, aws, and kubectl. Makes the terminal accessible to developers who don't memorize commands.

Origin Story

By Brendan Falk

The Problem

The terminal had no autocomplete for commands and flags. Developers had to memorize or Google CLI syntax constantly.

Building It

Built as a standalone product. Grew rapidly among developers. Acquired by Amazon in 2023 and integrated into their developer tools suite.

What It Means

Terminal autocomplete is something that should have existed decades ago. Fig proved the demand was massive.

The Dream

To make every CLI tool as discoverable as an IDE.
